IVF Treatments

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a simple series of procedures used to help with fertility or prevent genetic problems and assist with the conception of a child.

What is IVF Treatment (In Vitro Fertilization) ?

IVF Treatment (In Vitro Fertilization), commonly known as ‘test-tube baby’, is a procedure in which the egg is fertilized by sperm outside the body. The woman’s eggs are removed from the ovaries and fertilized in a fluid medium in the laboratory. Once fertilized, the fertilized egg is cultured for three to five days and then transferred to the woman’s uterus, in order to establish pregnancy.

What are the steps in IVF?

At Aspire Fertility, we understand that the journey to parenthood can be a complex one, and our In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) process is designed to guide you through every step with care, expertise, and advanced technology. Below is a breakdown of the key stages involved in IVF treatment.

Step 1: Ovarian Stimulation

The IVF process begins with ovarian stimulation, where medications are used to encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs instead of just one, which is typical in a normal menstrual cycle. Monitoring through ultrasounds and blood tests ensures that egg development is optimal.

Step 2: Egg Retrieval

Mature eggs are retrieved through a minimally invasive procedure known as follicular aspiration, ensuring optimal egg quality. This is done under sedation to ensure the patient’s comfort. Egg retrieval involves carefully inserting a fine needle through the vaginal wall to access the ovaries.

Step 3: Fertilization

The eggs are then fertilized in the laboratory. This can be done through traditional IVF, where eggs and sperm are mixed, or through Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into each egg for fertilization.

Step 4: Embryo Culture

Following fertilization, embryos are nurtured in a specialized laboratory setting. During this time, they are closely monitored to ensure proper development. Embryologists check for embryo quality before proceeding with the next step.

Step 5: Embryo Transfer

Once the embryos have developed, the best-quality embryos are selected for transfer. The embryo transfer is a simple and painless procedure where the selected embryo(s) are placed into the uterus.

Step 6: Pregnancy Test

Approximately 10–14 days after the embryo transfer, a blood test is done to determine if implantation has been successful and if pregnancy has occurred.

What is the Process of IVF Treatment?

IVF treatment at Aspire Fertility begins with an initial consultation where our fertility specialists will review your medical history and discuss treatment options. Once you and the specialist agree on IVF, the process involves ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo development, and transfer. Monitoring and support are provided every step of the way to ensure the best possible outcomes.

When is IVF Recommended?

IVF is recommended for couples facing the following fertility issues:

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes: Preventing natural conception.
  • Male infertility factors: Male infertility factors may include reduced sperm count, motility, or morphology.f
  • Ovulation disorders: Including conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
  • Unexplained infertility: persists when diagnostic tests yield inconclusive results.
  • Previous failed fertility treatments: Such as IUI (Intrauterine Insemination).
  • Age-related infertility: Particularly in women over the age of 35, where natural conception may be challenging.

Benefits of IVF Treatment

IVF provides numerous advantages for those struggling with infertility:

  • Higher success rates: Especially for couples who haven’t had success with other treatments.
  • Control over timing: IVF allows you to plan pregnancies according to your personal and professional life.
  • Genetic screening: With Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT), couples can screen embryos for genetic disorders before transfer.
  • Fertility preservation: IVF allows for the freezing of eggs or embryos for future use.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF IN VITRO FERTILISATION?

While IVF is a highly effective infertility treatment, it does come with some risks. Understanding these risks is crucial before beginning treatment.

Multiple Pregnancies

IVF increases the likelihood of multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.), particularly when more than one embryo is transferred. Multiple pregnancies carry additional health risks for both the mother and babies, including premature birth and low birth weight.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)

In some cases, the medications used for ovarian stimulation can lead to OHSS, a condition where the ovaries become swollen and painful. While rare, severe cases of OHSS may require hospitalization.

Ectopic Pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy, where the embryo implants outside of the uterus, can occur in a small percentage of IVF cases. This requires medical intervention as it cannot result in a viable pregnancy.

Emotional and Financial Stress

The IVF process can be emotionally taxing, particularly if multiple cycles are required. It can also be financially demanding, especially when insurance coverage is limited.

IVF Treatment

Step 1:

Investigation prior to IVF to make sure your general health is good

Step 2:

IVF Stimulation:

IVE stimulation: It would involve daily injections for a period ranging from 6-12 days. Please visit the hospital for injection before 9:30 am in the morning. Sundays the clinic is usually closed but for injections a nurse would be giving it at a particular time, so confirm with the reception regarding the time

Step 3:

Ovum pickup or egg collection :

It is done under anesthesia and would require you to come prepared for the same (doctor would explain the
preparation involved) you need to be in the hospital for about half a day.

Step 4:

Embryo transfer:

This would be the last step of the process usually we do
ET in the noon after the outpatient. You need to keep your bladder full for the same since it’s done with full bladder. The results of IVF will be known approximately 12-15 days from transfer. It is advisable to refrain from physical or psychological strain during
this period.

As you know inspite of the best efforts from your side and our side sometime we are faced with unsuccessful attempts. We suggest that you frequently speak to our counselors and doctors and voice your doubts and be clear in your thoughts so we can reach the positive results as soon as possible. Usually one good transfer gives you a chance at pregnancy of 60% at Aspire and this becomes 80% at the end of 3-4 transfers. This probability of pregnancy can be higher in good prognosis patients and can be lower in poor prognosis patients. Doctor would advise you and give you an individualistic probability depending on your existing condition. If one does not reach a pregnancy in 3 ET there are advanced treatments/investigations to be considered like ERA, LAH, parental karyotyping etc., Which can be discussed with the doctor.

11. What is the difference between IVF and test tube baby?
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and “test tube baby” both refer to the same fertility treatment process. “Test tube baby” is a commonly used non-medical term, while IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is the actual medical name for the procedure.

In IVF treatment, eggs and sperm are fertilized outside the body in a laboratory, and the resulting embryo is then transferred into the uterus to help achieve pregnancy. The term “test tube baby” became popular because fertilization happens in a lab environment rather than naturally inside the body.

Fertility specialists in Bangalore often personalize IVF treatment plans based on factors such as age, medical history, ovarian reserve, semen analysis, and previous pregnancy history.

24. What are the long term side effects of IVF injections?
In Vitro Fertilization injections are generally considered safe, but some women may experience temporary or long-term side effects depending on their hormonal response and overall health condition. Common side effects can include bloating, mood changes, headaches, or mild abdominal discomfort.

In rare cases, fertility medications may lead to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which causes moderate to severe pain in the abdomen and needs immediate medical attention. Long-term complications are uncommon, and fertility specialists usually monitor hormone levels closely throughout the In Vitro Fertilization process to reduce risks and ensure patient safety.

Fertility hospitals often customize In Vitro Fertilization medication protocols based on age, hormone levels, and patient’s condition.
25. Is IVF painful?
In Vitro Fertilization treatment is generally not considered painful, though some women may experience mild discomfort during hormone injections, egg retrieval, or embryo transfer procedures.

Most In Vitro Fertilization procedures are minimally invasive and performed under medical supervision. The level of discomfort varies depending on individual pain tolerance, fertility condition, and treatment response. Mild cramping, bloating, or emotional stress can occur during certain stages of the In Vitro Fertilization cycle.

Specialists in Aspire Fertility Center Bangalore usually guide patients through each stage carefully to make the IVF process more comfortable and less stressful.
26. Is IVF safe?
IVF treatment is generally considered safe and is widely used to help couples facing infertility challenges achieve pregnancy. Millions of healthy pregnancies and births have been successfully achieved through In Vitro Fertilization worldwide.

Like any medical procedure, In Vitro Fertilization may involve certain risks such as multiple pregnancy, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), or temporary emotional and physical stress during treatment. However, fertility specialists carefully monitor each stage of the In Vitro Fertilization cycle to improve safety and treatment success.

The treatment approach is usually personalized based on age, fertility condition, hormone levels, and overall reproductive health.
27. What is the full form of IVF?
The full form of IVF is In Vitro Fertilization, an advanced fertility treatment where eggs and sperm are fertilized outside the body in a laboratory before the embryo is transferred into the uterus.

IVF is commonly recommended for couples facing infertility conditions such as blocked fallopian tubes, PCOS, low sperm count, endometriosis, or unexplained infertility. The treatment usually involves multiple stages including ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, and embryo transfer.

The In Vitro Fertilization process and treatment plan may vary depending on age, fertility condition, hormone levels, and overall reproductive health.
28. What is IVF treatment?
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is an advanced fertility treatment where eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory to create embryos. The healthy embryo is then transferred into the uterus to help achieve pregnancy.

In Vitro Fertilization treatment is commonly recommended for couples facing infertility conditions such as blocked fallopian tubes, male infertility, PCOS, ovulation disorders, or unexplained infertility. The process usually includes ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, and embryo transfer.

29. What is IVF pregnancy?
An IVF pregnancy is a pregnancy achieved through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment rather than natural conception. In In Vitro Fertilization procedure, fertilization takes place in a laboratory before the embryo is transferred into the uterus.

Once the embryo successfully implants into the uterine lining, the pregnancy usually progresses similar to a natural pregnancy. In Vitro Fertilization pregnancies may require regular monitoring during the early stages to track embryo development, hormone levels, and maternal health.

Pregnancy care and monitoring plans can vary depending on age, fertility condition, and overall reproductive health history.
30. What is the meaning of IVF?
IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization, an advanced fertility treatment where eggs and sperm are combined outside the body in a laboratory to create embryos.

The term “in vitro” means “in glass,” referring to the laboratory process used for fertilization. After fertilization, the healthy embryo is transferred into the uterus to support pregnancy. In Vitro Fertilization is commonly recommended for couples facing male infertility, ovulation disorders, blocked fallopian tubes, PCOS, recurrent pregnancy loss, or unexplained infertility.

The treatment approach is usually planned based on fertility diagnosis, age, reproductive health condition, and pregnancy goals.
31. How is IVF done?
IVF treatment is done through a step-by-step fertility process that includes ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, embryo development, and embryo transfer.

During In Vitro Fertilization, fertility medications are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. The eggs are then collected and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory to create embryos. After embryo development, one or more healthy embryos are transferred into the uterus to improve the chances of pregnancy.

Each In Vitro Fertilization cycle may be planned differently depending on hormone levels, fertility condition, age, and individual treatment response.
